Two, 90-Minute Video-Lessons: Leveraging OPM/OPR/OPB. Sells Nothing!

David:

Ok, now you understand that my purpose in sending most e-mails is to
freely benefit/contribute and educate you on higher-performing
strategies to accelerate and multiply business profits.

I WILL still write (and send out) e-mails, looking for quality,
larger-sized companies to work with–long-term, on a profit-sharing,
mostly performance-based arrangement.

But since most of you aren’t suitable prospects, my goal usually is
merely to make a meaningful difference to every entrepreneur I can ever
reach/impact—with my fresh, new slants on business-building that
(hopefully) broaden your sense of what’s now possible for/from your
efforts, opportunities, time, market access, etc.

That stated–RECENTLY, I was the “Surprise Guest Presenter” at a unique
business conference–focused squarely on teaching business owners the
“ins-and-outs” of successful partnering. Rudolph Giuliani was the key
note. Oprah Winfrey’s friend, Steadman Graham was one of many speakers.
But they brought ME there—for one reason:

To blow the lid off people’s linear-minded thinking about all that’s
possible—by doing more inventive forms of power partnering deals with
other organizations. I purposely use the word organizations …..

..because MY realm of power partnering, deal-making and alliance-forming
vastly expands…well beyond mere B-to-B!

I’ve figured out how to ethically (and richly) tap into ALL dimensions
of assets, access, resources, brand currency, distribution, affinity,
credibility, buying momentum, and unbridled, unrivaled, unhedged
endorsements and collaboration–with non-profits, associations,
publications, key influencers, affinity groups, and all forms of media
channels.

This, is besides the ability to orchestrate profit-generating wonders ,
by partnering with conventional retail, wholesale, service, technology,
manufacturing, distribution and professional-type enterprises.

PLUS–my methods DO NOT merely look at ways to create more sales or
clients from these relationships. I’ve figured out something just short
of 100 “powerhouse” ways your business can honorably mine OPM, OPP, OPB,
OPMP, OPT, OPI, etc.

Wondering what these abbreviations mean?

Other people’s money, other people’s people, other people’s brand, other
people’s market place, other people’s technology, other people’s
influence. I can go on for two pages…but (hopefully) you get the idea.

Anyhow… I spoke twice… Each time for about 90 minutes. My working
title was called ”Maximizing The Leverage In Relational Capital”. I
barely got through a tenth of my slides…YET my presentations (remember I
did TWO) were rated “The Best, most provocative…stimulating,
possibility-provoking discussions of the event.”

I did these presentations to ”test the waters” for a new business
service I’m organizing to actually facilitate big-payoff Power
Partnering deals for suitable-sized businesses.

Again, most of you wouldn’t qualify, anyhow–and I did NOT try and sell a
thing in these live discussions–Other than selling business
owner-attendees on how much more profit potential, sales possibility and
expanded success-performance they could tap into -by adopting a more
limitless form of thinking.

The event was sold-out. So, technically you couldn’t have seen these two
presentations–even if you wanted to attend.

But I want to share them now. Both, 90-minute sessions. Go here for
both:

http://abraham.com/mega-partnering-videos/

No opt-in required. Nothing being sold, whatsoever! See if watching one
(or both) animates your spirit and captivates, stimulates…then motivates
you to see your business world differently–filled with far more
potential.

Enjoy,

Jay

3 Must do steps so she won’t reject your approach

David,

“Women just look at me weird, how do I make openers work?” or
“How do I segue from opening a woman to attracting her?”

If you’re too scared to approach a woman and don’t know how
to start a conversation, in this email I give you 3 simple steps
to help you.

(By the way this is one of the bigger problems from the posts
and emails of the 2012 Challenge. But…NO MAN GETS LEFT
BEHIND, because I’ll help you with your sticking points even
after the challenge.)

Style helped thousands of men conquer approach anxiety and
segue to attraction. If you want to know…

…which openers are the best to use for any situation
…the 3 things women want to know when you approach them.
…the secret Style used to overcome many of his fears.
…what most guys who are traveling say to women, that opens
well, but does NOT help build attraction.

Hear it and read it in Style’s own words by clicking the link
below and getting the “Master The Game Part 1″ pack:

www.stylelife.com/masteryourgame

Here’s the first 3 simple steps of advice…

==============================================
FIRST STICKING POINT: THE APPROACH
==============================================

(A short excerpt from 1 of 8 recorded guru lessons from Style’s
“Master the Game Part 1″ Pack.)

Hype (Academy Student): “I don’t know how to open. I feel
like the openers I know, are good for more toned down places.
Like I can say, ‘Oh it looks like the party’s over here,’ but
afterwards I really don’t know where to take it because I
can’t really say, ‘How do you guys know each other?’ right
after that but it’s the skill set I have right now.”

Style’s whole answer is too elaborate for email. Here’s his 3
main steps:

STEP 1: START BEING SOCIAL

“When you walk in the club, find a safe set; a group that’s
easy to approach and wants a conversation. Maybe there’s a
couple of older ladies or a group of guys who look out of
place. Just go make friends. You’ll feel like you know people
in the club and you’ve got a safe spot to return to when
you’re not approaching people.”

STEP 2: TAKE A BREATHE AND SLOW DOWN

“Slow down. Don’t feel because everything is high energy in
the club, you must bounce around like a pinball. Be a little
faster paced than normal but show confidence in yourself when
you approach by slowing down. Slow down your gestures. Speak
loudly. Know that what you have to say is interesting.”

STEP 3: DON’T LINGER ON THE OPENER

“Once I get an answer to my opener (or don’t), I’m on to my
next thing. ‘I’ve gotta return to my friends, but I just
noticed something interesting about you (or all of you). I’ll
tell you and then I’ve gotta run.’ Bam! You’re in there. Now
run a DHV like the Best Friend’s Test.”

If you want more, don’t let your circumstances dictate

Hello David,

Happy Belated New Year!

When I was just getting my adult act together, finding my way out of high school and into business, the brothers of a girl I was dating, a dentist daughter, worked as a car parking valets at a local, upscale restaurant, called LANNINGS.

Christmas Eve was a big night there, but New Year’s Eve was THE big night.  People made reservations months in advance and made certain to arrive early because the bar was filled to SRO with vultures hoping for no-shows and unexpectedly available tables.

For the record, New Year’s Eve rolls around here in northeastern Ohio in winter.  Sometimes, by then, we are ears deep in snow and bitter cold.  Other times, still mild weather, only pregnant with gloom and miserable weather wind.

The younger of the two brothers, from whom I got my first business loan handed over by him in coffee cans of coins from under the bed, told me that…

Even though they stood outside without cover in starched shirts and bow ties and unlined red jackets from 5:00PM until 1:00AM, and had to park 2/3rds of the cars in the empty office complex parking lot accross the street, running back and forth all night…

They hoped and prayed and dreamed of having the worst, most vile, most violent and nasty mix of rain, snow, sleet, wind and cold possible on New Year’s Eve.

Because when that happened, tips quadrupled.

Of course, they were paying for the lion’s share of their college educations, not expecting or getting them free, so they were motivated.  They had goals.

LANNING is still thriving.  I went there a few years back for New Year’s Eve.  And the principle enunicated by the brothers-not-grim is also unchanged.  The worst of weather makes opporunity quadruple for those willing to wade out into it and collect money.

I live in a place where there’s alot of weather.  Carla is interested in the TV weather reports so when she’s here we watch it on the 11:00PM news.  If I’m by myself, I never do.

Never check it.

Just like I never think about the price of gas.

Because I am going where I’m going and I’m going to do what I’m going to do regardless of the weather or the price of gas.

I have NEVER let such things dictate to me.

NEVER.  Not in 1972, 1982, 2002 and not in 2012.

I might add:  entire societies or individuals choose their dictators.  Which is why, so often, liberators are shocked to find themselves unwelcome-if they really wanted liberated, they’d be liberated.

Somebody thinks: well, it’s easy for you not to let weather or gas prices dictate; you have a good, new 4-wheel drive car with good tires and you are rich.

No, I am rich because when I had old, bad, rusty, leaky, falling-apart cars and bald tires and no money I still did not permit circumstances to dictate.

I am, incidentally, speaking both literally and metaphorically, for those keeping score.

Anyway, Happy, Happy, Happy New Year!

Mob Wives is an American reality television series airing on VH1 that made its debut April 17, 2011. It follows six Staten Island women after their husbands or fathers are arrested and imprisoned for crimes connected to the Mafia. They have been described as “rats and stoolies”, since discussing private family business on TV violates the mafia code.[1]The idea for the show came from Jennifer “Jenn” Graziano, sister of Renee Graziano.

Season 2 premiered Sunday, January 1, 2012 at 8 PM with a 2 new cast members. Ramona Rizzo is a good friend of cast member Karen Gravano and the granddaughter of former well known mobster Benjamin “Lefty Guns” Ruggiero, and Angela “Big Ange” Raiola is the niece of Salvatore “Sally Dogs” Lombardi and a single mother of 2. Big Ange was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY with her two sisters and four brothers, and always strived to be popular with “the mob”.[citation needed] A spin-off of the hit series, titled Mob Wives: Chicago, is set to air in Spring 2012.[citation needed]

Cast

  • Renee Graziano is the daughter of Anthony Graziano, currentconsigliere of the Bonanno crime family, and ex-wife of Hector “Junior” Pagan, Jr., who has been charged with various crimes with the Mafia.[2][3][4] She describes herself as a “loud, foul-mouthed drama queen”.[5] The New York Post reports that her father, Anthony Graziano, will no longer speak with her or her sister Jennifer (the creator of Mob Wives) as a result of their appearances on the show.[6] Her son, A.J., has stated that he does not want to go into “the life”, and wants to go to college and become an engineer. On December 1, 2011 it was reported that Hector has been working as an informant for the FBI, which might have an impact on season 2.[7]
  • Drita D’Avanzo works as a freelance make-up artist and is of Albanianancestry.[8] She is married to Lee D’Avanzo, who has been in and out of prison for such crimes as drug dealing and numerous bank robberies[9] and dated Karen Gravano before marrying Drita. She is the mother of two.[10]
  • Carla Facciolo’s husband is Joseph Ferragamo, who is also incarcerated at the time of the airing of the series in 2011. Carla and Joseph have two children together. According to the show, Carla wants a divorce from Joseph as soon as he gets out of prison. According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons website, Ferragamo’s expected release date was 24 September 2011.[11]; and from episode 7 on, Carla prepared for and then dealt with her husband’s return to Staten Island after being released from prison.
  • Karen Gravano is the daughter of Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, a formerunderboss of the Gambino crime family, and federal informant.[12][13] She is also the ex-girlfriend of Drita D’Avanzo’s husband, Lee. While in the United States Federal Witness Protection Program, she was implicated in a drug ring and served three years of probation.[14] She states, on the show, that she has returned to Staten Island to write an autobiographical memoir, ultimately titled In the Shadow of the Bull. Discussions about the book and its first chapter, which Gravano shares with castmates D’Avanzo and Graziano, caused controversy within the show and outside it as well.[15][16]
  • Ramona Rizzo (Season 2-present) is the granddaughter of former well-known mobster Benjamin “Lefty Guns” Ruggiero, who was played by Al Pacino in the movie Donnie Brasco. Ramona is a childhood friend of Karen Gravano, and as children they shared sleepovers and made their first communions together. They are so close they refer to themselves as cousins.
  • Angela “Big Ang” Raiola (Season 2-present) is the niece of Salvatore “Sally Dogs” Lombardi, a deceased captain of the Genovese crime family. Angela, a single mother of 2 was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY with her two sisters and four brothers.

[edit]Recurring Cast

  • Nikole (Season 1-present) is Renee’s best friend; she also has family members in the mob lifestyle.[citation needed]
  • Eleanor (Season 1-present) is Carla’s friend/former co-worker
  • AJ Pagan (Season 1-present) is Renee and Junior’s son. He hasn’t wanted to follow the footsteps of the mob lifestyle. He is currently attending college with the intent of majoring in engineering.[citation needed]

[edit]Reception

The first season of Mob Wives was well received by some entertainment critics. Entertainment Weekly‘s television criticKen Tucker praised the show in his review, stating, “As someone who’s watched at least a few episodes of every version of the Real Housewives franchise and feels a bit nauseous about it, I didn’t come to Mob Wives with high hopes. But this floridly funny, vicariously vicious reality series exerts a vulgar charm.” He noted the fascination of watching excessively made-up people living in apparent luxury and the authenticity of the drama between the women. “By turns funny, appalling, and frightening, Mob Wives is swiftly paced, reality-TV at its most effusively dismaying.”[17] The Hollywood Reporter critic David Knowles felt the show was significantly better than typical reality TV. He found the women’s internal conflict between their mob past and their desire to break free from that lifestyle to be the underlying question of the series. Knowles noted that the women’s story lines are so tense and engrossing that the surveillance-style effect used to introduce them seemed unnecessarily cliché. “As we learned from The Sopranos, the wives and children of mafiosos can be every bit as compelling as the gangsters themselves… As for those other real housewives franchises, their endless squabbles and social climbing antics are rendered rather trivial after you watch the first five minutes of Mob Wives.”[18]

Some New York critics were less enthusiastic about the show. David Hinckley’s New York Daily News review called it a “tired concept, is so bad it should sleep with fishes”. The review also said “these are unpleasant people in an unwatchable show”. On the other hand, he wrote: “Now it could be added that if this is what you want on TV, Mob Wives is an all-you-can-eat buffet. Imagine the angriest of the “Real Housewives” ratcheted up into overdrive”.[19] Staten Island Advance‘sSILive.com “Entertainment Comment of the Day” said, “Out of interest we only watched about twenty minutes of the first episode and couldn’t stomach watching the second. We don’t know what’s so interesting about a bunch of low-life women (the one pictured is a real piece of work) who think that husbands that go off to prison is like spending a year at college. I bet their kids are real proud of them. Any glorification of a life of crime is pathetic. They all deserve whatever misery that comes along”.[20]

The Mafia theme of the show was a concern for some non-journalists as well. Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro stated; “I’ve seen it — It’s disgraceful. It paints Staten Island and Italian-Americans in a bad light. It’s detrimental because people will think this is what Staten Island is made of. I’m Italian — and this is bad for our doctors, our lawyers, the people who came from Italy to build their lives”.[21] UNICO National, an Italian advocacy group, said the show is tantamount to “trash TV like Jersey Shore. I hope it dies because no one watches it. We were mobsters and mafiosos with The Sopranos, bimbos and buffoons with Jersey Shore, and now we’re back where we started. It’s a disgrace”.[22] Gawker.com said, “This seems like a terrible idea for a reality show! Would anyone watch a show called Mass Murderers’ Wives?”[23]

Relatives of murder victims killed by the cast members relatives are not happy about the show. Jackie Colucci, whosebrother Joseph was murdered by Salvatore Gravano in 1970, stated: “She should be ashamed that her father is a murderer and a drug dealer. I would be ashamed and crawling in a hole and staying out of the limelight”.[24]

List Of Top 36 Free Classified Ads Sites Where It Is Not A Waste Of Your Time To Post Your Ad

Here is a list of 36 top classified ads where people actually view, post ads and buy stuff. We have eliminated all junk sites from this list. There are no ffa pages, forums acting like classified sites, classified sites which are full of spam or which have no traffic and are not well maintained. These are real classified ads site where if you post your ad you actually have a serious chance of somebody seeing your ad and responding. There are no sites here with an Alexa ranking over 150,000. This means that the sites below all get serious traffic.

1. http://www.craigslist.org- The grandaddy of classified ads sites.

2. http://www.backpage.com The second busiest classified site after Craigslist. This is where all the escort ads went after Craigslist took down their erotic ads section due to pressure from 17 Attorney Generals. Not so with Village Voice owned Backpage.com. They told the attorney generals they were just fine with their erotic ads section thank you. Those guys at the Village Voice have major cohones!

3. http://www.gumtree.com Weird name but this site is one of the busiest classifieds sites out there. This high traffic classifieds site is focused on UK ads.

4. http://www.oodle.com This serious classified site has partnerships with ForRent.com in the US and Autotrader UK.

5. http://www.ebayclassifieds.com The official classifieds site for Ebay.

6. http://www.olx.com This board has a presence in most countries and can be read in English or Spanish.

7. http://www.usfreeads.com A popular US focused site with a large business opportunity and pet section.

8. http://www.classifiedads.com Classifieds focused on the English speaking world. US, UK, AU, and India.

9. http://www.inetgiant.com A green board not only in color but in their ads. They have a well represented area for green products. The board is pretty much translated in most languages. I checked their Lithuanian board. No ads there yet. Do you want to be the first?

10. http://adpost.com Solid board with presences in the United States, Singapore,Canada,Malaysia, United Kingdom, Philippines, Ireland, Australia, India, Indonesia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

11. http://adlandpro.com Well established board with a strong focus on internet marketing, business opportunities, and website promotion.

12. http://www.classifiedsforfree.com A well organized world-wide classifieds board.

13. http://www.salespider.com/online-classifieds-free-advertising Classified ads are only one part of this business site. They have forums, sell leads, and offer business tools for online businesses.

14. http://www.yakaz.com A lean uncluttered board which reads your ip and directs your ad posting accordingly. US based as far as I can tell. However, I have not yet tried accessing it with a Chinese ip. Maybe the entire site changes language with my ip. I hate being a slave to my ip. What if I am a Greek living in Spain?

15. http://www.thefreeadforum.com Ok I cheated. This is my site. But it qualifies. High traffic site which is getting serious promotion. I am doing ppc and seo campaigns for each individual category. So if you have a turtle to sell this is the place to get that type of targeted traffic!

16. http://www.domesticsale.com US classifieds site which allows car dealers and other heavy advertisters to bulk upload large amounts of listings.

17. http://www.pennysaverusa.com/classifieds/usa/index.html This is the online version of the old Penny Saver newspaper which was a very popular print newspaper with discount deals and classified ads.

18. http://epage.com This site has been in business since 1994. That is before we had Google. It looks somewhat like Usfreeads.com but with less emphasis on business opportunities. They have an affiliate program with over 34,000 affiliates. This means if you post your ad here it goes out on a feed to over 30,000 other sites who run their ads. This means more exposure for you. Many of these sites have programs where other websites run their feeds. This gives you quite a bit more exposure.

19. http://www.recycler.com Simple easy to negotiate classifieds board.

20. http://www.webcosmo.com US based with worldwide advertising possibilities.

21. http://www.hoobly.com The cleanest looking classifieds site so far. Just the ads. No clutter at all. Very Googlesque in their design. It must be working for them. Over 15,000 people have clicked their like button.

22. http://www.freeadlists.com They do it all: personals, cars, pets and they do it all over the world though they are US based. They even claim on their homepage that if you are a man looking for a woman you can find one here! Watch out Match.com!

23. http://www.sell.com How much did this domain name cost them? I give them number 1 on domain name value. Excellent classifieds site as well. Kudos for not just squatting the domain name. They have been running online classifieds since 1999. Their advertising engine has been used by big business directories such as AT&T’s YELLOWPAGES.com, newspapers such as the San Francisco Chronicle, and niche online properties such as sellhomes.com. Sell.com is a part of a network of advertising properties. Again, if you advertise on many of these sites your ad will simultaneously run on thousands of other partner sites.

24. http://www.bestwayclassifieds.com/ Claims to be the fastest growing free advertising site in the world. Hmmm, I do not think so. Could they even have said one of the fastest? In any case they may not be the fastest growing site but they do get some good traffic and they have a nice classifieds site worth posting to.

25. http://www.webclassifieds.us A solid well designed board with a .us domain name. What else could you want? They seem to monetize their site quite a bit with Adsense which is good and bad. It means they include more features on the free ads, including free pictures and youtube video (many free boards charge for this) but visitors could be distracted by the Adsense ads.

26. http://www.americanlisted.com A family friendly US only board. I guess if you are an escort or into SM you should stick with Backpage.com. Your church announcements would be welcome here though.

27. http://www.freeadscity.com Lean easy to read worldwide board with non classified ads discretely at the bottom of the board.

28. http://www.chooseyouritem.com This is what they have to say about themselves “Place your classified ads with us and your ads appear not only on our site but also on over 70 partner websites — including over 30 classic car or vehicle related websites, as well as ISP’s, real estate, media, shopping and search networks. Each month, over 1 million visitors view tens of millions of our pages – making our Classified Network one of strongest in the country. Not only is our exposure the best but we also provide the best in value. ” Sounds like a good deal to me.

29. http://www.daype.com Straight forward US only board.

30. http://geebo.com They have quotes about connecting communities, building safe environments and how they are leaders of a “revolution of how classifieds sites see themselves as responsible citizens.” So if you want to join their “nice” revolution go ahead. And while you are at it why not sell that old Buick Enclave you have been meaning to get rid of. Vive La Revolution! (Pervs see Backpage.com)

31. http://www.claz.org I like the name. This site is actually an agregator of classified sites within 250 miles with picture previews. They feature ads from most of the sites I mention here. It does not look like you can place an ad directly here but it probably will appear if you place it on any of the other sites listed here.

32. http://wantedwants.com Well, you can stop looking at classifieds sites right now, forget Craigslist, forget Backpage, nope, it has been officially decided. These guys officially declare that their site is the best classifieds site in the world! I do not agree. But I think their site is worth posting to. Respectable traffic, and sharp unique and fun design. US centered with opportunity for international ads as well.

Rethinking Information Diversity in Networks

Here’s some interesting weekend reading.

There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether social networks give you a more diverse perspective on the world through helping you see more people’s opinions or whether they’re more of an echo chamber that just reinforces your opinions since the people you share with probably have similar opinions to your own.

The latest research shows that social networks tend to give you a more diverse perspective, because even though your close ties may have similar opinions to yours, the vast majority of information you see comes from weaker ties who tend to have a more diverse opinions.

This seems right to me. Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. Making the world more open means more information and perspective is available. Making the world more connected means people are exposed to more of those perspectives through the connections they’re able to maintain. That’s why I love what we’re doing.

How do your friends shape the information you see and read online? Social networking technologies like Facebook let us connect to hundreds, even thousands of people — and have fundamentally changed how people get their information…

How do your friends shape the information you see and read online? Social networking technologies like Facebook let us connect to hundreds, even thousands of people — and have fundamentally changed how people get their information.

While much of our time is spent communicating with close friends about events in our personal lives [1], we also use online networks to share breaking news, discuss political issues and learn about new trends.  In 2010, my colleagues Itamar Rosenn, Cameron Marlow, Lada Adamic and I conducted a study on Facebook to understand the nature of information spread in social networks.

Some claim that social networks act like echo chambers in which people only consume and share information from likeminded close friends, stifling the spread of diverse information. Our study paints a different picture of the world.

Instead, we found that even though people are more likely to consume and share information that comes from close contacts that they interact with frequently (like discussing a photo from last night’s party), the vast majority of information comes from contacts that they interact with infrequently.  These distant contacts are also more likely to share novel information, demonstrating that social networks can act as a powerful medium for sharing new ideas, highlighting new products and discussing current events.

The research suggests that Facebook isn’t the echo chamber that some might expect – online social networks actually increase the spread of novel information and diverse viewpoints.

Social Networks as Information Pathways

Economic sociologist Mark Granovetter was one of the first to popularize the use of social networks in understanding the spread of information.  In his seminal 1973 paper, The Strength of Weak Ties [2], Granovetter found that surprisingly, people are more likely to acquire jobs that they learned about through individuals they interact with infrequently rather than their close personal contacts.

To explain this phenomenon Granovetter used social graphs to illustrate how networks relate to information access (Figure 1). When a person interacts with two individuals frequently, those individuals are also likely to interact with one another.  It follows that people tend to form dense clusters of strong ties who are all connected.

Figure 1: We are connected to core groups of strong ties that we interact with frequently and weak ties that we interact with infrequently. Granovetter’s hypothesis about the “strength of weak ties” states that weak ties facilitate information flow from disparate clusters of people.

What do these structures have to do with information access? Since people in these clusters all know each other, any information that is available to one individual spreads quickly to others within the cluster. These tight-knit social circles tend to be small relative to people’s entire social network, and when it comes to information about future job opportunities, it can be hard to find new leads.

Granovetter used the relationship between interaction frequency and social structure to explain why information about jobs is instead found through weak ties that we interact with infrequently.  Weak ties help spread novel information by bridging the gap between clusters of strong tie contacts.  The strength of weak ties informs much of the popular understanding of information spread in social networks.

Birds of a Feather Surf Together

But what about information that is more widely available, like news on the Internet? To understand the flow of more general types of information in society, it’s important not only to take into account how people are connected, but also the commonalities that promote the spread of information.  One of the most robust findings in social networks is that of homophily [3], the tendency of individuals with similar characteristics to associate with one another.  Individuals are connected to each other through workplaces, professions, schools, clubs, hobbies, political beliefs and other affiliations.  The homophily principle holds true for any kind of social network you can think of: close friends, professional contacts, classmates and even the people you ride the bus with.

Today, these commonalities not only shape how often people interact and what they talk about, but also what kinds of information they as individuals seek on the Web.  Homophily suggests that people who interact frequently are similar and may consume more of the same information.  Individuals that interact less often tend to be dissimilar and may consume more diverse information.  This view of the world is illustrated in Figure 2 below.

Figure 2: Information spread in online social networks. Our study suggests that strong ties are similar and more likely to be tuned into the same web sites. Weak ties, being more dissimilar, tend to visit different websites.

Interest and Novelty

To understand how online social networks affect the spread of information, we used random variation in the News Feed to determine how likely a person is to share Web content if she did or did not see the content shared by her friends.  We found that people are more likely to share the information they were exposed to by their strong ties than by their weak ties on Facebook (Figure 3).

Figure 3: People are more likely to share information (links to Web pages) that they were exposed to by strong ties in their News Feed [4]. Tie strength between two individuals is measured by the number of comments a person received from their friend on Facebook. Other measurements of tie strength, like the number of messages, co-appearances in photos, and discussion on posts are discussed in our paper [5].

There are many possible explanations for the increased flow of information across strong ties. One reason is that close contacts are more likely to be similar to one another, and therefore find content shared by their close friends more interesting.  An alternative explanation is that strong ties are more “influential”, so that people are more likely to be persuaded to share information from their close contacts.

We also investigate how Facebook amplifies information distribution. That is, if a friend shares something on Facebook, how many times more likely are you to share that information as a result of seeing it in the News Feed? The figure below shows how this multiplicative effect depends on the strength of your tie with that friend.

Figure 4: Weak ties spread novel information that people are unlikely to otherwise see. The figure above shows how many times more likely people are to share a page because of exposure via the News Feed from strong and weak ties.

We found that information shared by a person’s weak ties is unlikely to be shared at a later point in time independently of those friends. Therefore, seeing content from a weak tie leads to a nearly tenfold increase in the likelihood that a person will share a link. In contrast, seeing information shared by a strong tie in News Feed makes people just six times as likely to share. In short, weak ties have the greatest potential to expose their friends to information that they would not have otherwise discovered.

The Collective Influence of Weak Ties

Ultimately, we are interested in how these network effects shape information spread as a whole.  Even though a person is more likely to share a single piece of information from one of their close contacts, it turns out that weak ties are collectively responsible for the majority of information spread.

Let’s consider a hypothetical example (illustrated in Figure 5). Let’s say a person has 100 contacts that are weak tie friends, and 10 that are strong tie friends.  Suppose the chance that you’ll share something is very high for strong tie friends, say 50%, but the weak tie friends tend to share less interesting stuff, so the likelihood of sharing is only 15%. Therefore the amount of information spread due to weak and strong ties would be 100*0.15 = 15, and 10*0.50 = 5 respectively, so in total, people would end up sharing more from their weak tie friends.

Figure 5: People are more likely to share information from their strong ties, but because of their abundance, weak ties are primarily responsible for the majority of information spread on Facebook. The figure above illustrates how a majority of influence (orange) can be generated by weak ties, even if strong ties are individually more influential.

It turns out that the mathematics of information spread on Facebook is quite similar to our hypothetical example: the majority of people’s contacts are weak tie friends, and if we carry out this same computation using the empirical distribution of tie strengths and their corresponding probabilities, we find that weak ties generate the majority of information spread.

Conclusion

The information we consume and share on Facebook is actually much more diverse in nature than conventional wisdom might suggest.  We are exposed to and spread more information from our distant contacts than our close friends.  Since these distant contacts tend to be different from us, the bulk of information we consume and share comes from people with different perspectives. This may provide some comfort to those who worry that social networks are simply an echo chamber where people are only exposed to those who share the same opinions.  Our work is among the first to rigorously quantify influence at a mass scale, and shows that online social networks can serve as an important medium for sharing new perspectives, products and world events.

[1] Common experience would suggest that we spend most of our time communicating with only a few individuals on Facebook.  To a large extent, this is true, and documented in Backstrom, et al.Center of Attention: How Facebook Users allocate Attention. ICWSM, 2011.

[4] It is important to note that very often, information does not “cascade” very far along the network.  This phenomenon has been observed in earlier research on Twitter in Everyone’s an Influencer: Quantifying Influence on Twitter by Bakshy et al. and has been studied across other networks more extensively in upcoming work by Sharad Goel and Duncan Watts at Yahoo! Research, NY.
